Adelita Style 101: Styling Erin

click on the photo for a nicer view

styling 101
step 1 • start with a good photographer
step 2 • goof around with your model to make her comfortable
step 3 • strike a pose
step 4 • flip it up and “say cheese!”

While working on a photo shoot, I decided to drag one of my stylish buddies on set. Erin is a great inspiration to all of us creative gals not only for her fashion flare but for her career path. She is a graphic designer at a leading brand merchandising company where her job entails designing major presentations for high profile clients! For our shoot, she is wearing an adorable GUESS sweater and boots with MEK Sydney Boot Stretch Jeans available at BUCKLE.

Shoes, shoes, shoes!

click on this photo for a better look.

$39, gorgeous shoes, no obligation and free stylists' advice? Sign me up! When I saw Kim Kardashian promoting her new business venture on ET, I had to investigate shoedazzle.com. Here's how it works: After taking a quick fashion survey, in a few days shoedazzle's fashion stylist will provide a choice of 5 pairs of shoes. Membership includes one pair of shoes every month for only $39. If you don’t like any of their choices, they'll provide you with new ones. If you still don't like the choices, you can select “Skip this Month” and you won't charged! The only problem I have with this shoe club? Ugh, why didn't I think of it? Well at least you can tell your friends that you heard about it on Adelita Style!

Today's AdelitaStyle Self Portrait

click on the photo for a better look!

Sorry for the late post today. I was styling at a photoshoot. Since it was on form, I had to be comfy. I chose my favorite little dress from ZETO over my favorite 1969 jeans from THE GAP. (Let 'er rip! I love this look, very bohemian.) The crocheted jacket is vintage and the earrings are TARINA TARANTINO carved lucite and crystal discs in ivory. Lil Star made me this adorable friendship bracelet that I am wearing as a choker.

A Brand New Bang-Up Work Do

Sean and I are hard at work today at the coffee shop. (Needed a change of location.) But, don't you love my new bangin bangs!! Vanessa (more about her later...) gave me a great haircut last night during my girl party. Had a bunch of lovely girls over for haircuts, waxing and facial peels. It was a regular salon up in the Kahlo residence. How can you make a fun beauty party. Start with talented friends, add some food, a dash of wine or beverage of your choice and some soothing tunes in the background. Tadah! Everyone leaves with a different look!

Wildflowers

Liz and I at the TeaCup. Some annoying hippy introvert took this picture! Sigh.

On top of a little hill in Seattle, sits a studio with wildflowers growing in it. Not your typical flower, wildflowers are completely unique, the fingerprints of the natural world; each contains it’s own matchless color, shape, size and scent. Elizabeth Power tends to these little lovelies and we wanted to know more.

ADELITA STYLE: Tell us about Wildflowers.

ELIZABETH POWER: I created this workshop for young girls because I believe that journaling is a powerful way to tap into what’s going on inside you. For little girls and older girls writing is a specific way to learn more about themselves. WILDFLOWERS JOURNAL WORKSHOPS are designed for a specific type of self-discovery.

AS: What subjects do you talk about?

EP: We talk about the things most vital to young girls growing up, sexuality, self-esteem issues and body image, but in a safe, enjoyable atmosphere. We handle these very serious issues with humor and fun.

AS: Sounds terrific! What’s an example of what goes on in your fun workshop?

EP: Well one of our journal questions might be, “If you were a certain color, what would you be?” The girls would then carry out their journal entry through art and words.

AS: When you say art, what type of medium would the girls use?

EP: Not only drawing, but scrapbooking, collages, stickers and fabric are used to express their feelings.

AS: How long is a typical workshop? What age range are the girls?

EP: Workshops range anywhere from 2-3 hours with 8-12 girls per workshop with classes for different ranges of ages. They start as young as 8 years old and each workshop is tailored to that specific age range; 4th and 5th graders in one class, middle school girls in another, high school girls have there own class and then of course there are even adult classes.

AS: Really? How would an adult benefit?

EP: Adult women are constantly reinventing themselves, getting to know themselves and hopefully, through the workshops ultimately accepting themselves. My goal is for women, no matter what age, to walk away more enlightened about themselves.

AS: What do you gain from teaching these workshops?

EP: It’s empowering for me! My favorite thing is watching people discover something about themselves and then appreciate their own beauty and celebrate their wild, unique individuality.

Dedication: For Mable, the world will miss your sweetness. You were the true definition of a wildflower...

Happy Birthday Barbie

Click on this photo for a better look at my collection of TARINA TARANTINO limited Edition Barbie jewelry.

Exactly 50 years ago today on March 9, 1959, Miss Barbie Millicent Roberts, from Willows, Wisconsin, made her way into stores and in our hearts. Today is the 50th birthday of our beloved BARBIE!

I have so many stories about my love affair with the blonde beauty. I still have many of the dolls that I played with in my childhood; Malibu Barbie, Skipper and Francie, Quick Curl Barbie and Midge, even Donny and Marie among many, many more! On the top shelf of my closet rest vintage 60’s and 70’s carrying cases. Inside each container countless evening gowns, swimsuits and casual outfits (some store-bought but, most made by my mother and grandmother) live among tiny little pumps in every color floating between the crevasses of the matching fabric.

Hate her or love her, she sure looks extraordinary after all these years!

Girl Bands

click on these photos for a better look!

Did South Korean nine-member girl band Girls’ Generation (fans usually refer to the group as SNSD, the acronym of the group's Korean name So Nyeo Shi Dae) just add another singer? The original members include (in order of official announcement) Yoona, Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Taeyeon (the leader), Jessica, and Sunny. Kamie was a natural addition to make SNSD a ten-member girl group! After all with similar backgrounds through acting, DJ-ing, and modeling, wouldn’t Kamie be the perfect fit? Well, not really.

I am definitely NOT the tenth pickup to this adorable group. (There isn’t one.) But, haven’t you ever wished you could be in your own girl band? This is one dream that countless girls share. It has been my “castle in the sky” for decades. (Won’t tell you how many. Too shocking.) When I was 10, my sister and I would put on our own backyard variety shows and invited the neighbors to view our lip-syncing abilities. I would daydream endlessly about appearing on talk and variety shows. I practiced my responses as much as I would practice actually singing.

Today, I still practice, in my head of course, just what I will say when being interrogated on Oprah or Chelsea Lately. I begged my husband to buy me a Fender Hello Kitty Stratocaster guitar for my birthday and I intend on playing it. Sean and I even did this photoshoot to demonstrate that, at least aesthetically; I might just be a good fit. And maybe, just maybe, someday soon you will see me in my own girl band called Adelita.

Girls' Day!!

click on the photo for a better look!

The Girls’ Day festival or Hina Matsuri was legally established in 1687. On the third day of the third month a day of purification in the Shinto religion comes from ancient times. In the purification rites, The use of dolls is mentioned in the Tale of Genji, written almost a thousand years ago!

Thomas Hull writes: …the Dolls' Festival (a.k.a. Girls' Festival). This happening originated as a purification ceremony using many folded dolls. "This ritual was performed by breathing on the dolls, rubbing them against one's body to rid oneself of impurities, then throwing the infected dolls into a river to be carried away" (Kenneway, Complete Origami, New York : St. Martin's Press, 1987, p. 82)....

Today, girls and their mothers take out the hina and arrange them on a red cloth which may cover a structure, the hina-dan, with as many as 7 steps, each with its own designated set of hina: the Emperor and Empress at the top, three ladies serving them sake on the next step, then five or even ten musicians, two "guardians" with weapons, and three servants. Girls play hostess to their friends who are "fed" in tiny dish sets.

Lil Star and I celebrate Girls’ Day by honoring all girls, mothers, daughters, their dolls and, yes, their candy! Lil Star took these photos to share our small but, sweet ritual.

Girl Power Hot Off the Press: Lindsay Tarpley:

Take a look at Lindsay Tarpley, by the age of 21, she had scored two of the most important goals in U.S. soccer history! The first was a rebound shot in the championship game of the 2002 FIFA U-19 World Championship, giving the USA a dramatic 1-0 Foudy & Tarpley sudden death overtime victory over host Canada and the first-ever world title for youth women. Her second came in the 2004 Olympic gold medal game “off a blast from 25-yards out into the lower left corner for the game’s first score.” She has moved into the top-13 all-time scorers in U.S. history! Now that’s Girl Power!!

Girl' Week at Adelita Style

click on the photo for a better look!

March 3rd is Girls' Day in Japan! (More about this tomorrow since it's the "real" kickoff.) So this week is of course, Girl's Week at Adelita Style!! We are starting the week with our power girl, Lil Star. (aka Jelly Stelly) Up till now you have heard of her as a contributor but this is her first appearance. This week is a great week for Lil Star to showcase her many years of experience as a girl and her new experience as a writer and photographer and of course, a model. At 10 years old, Miss Star is Adelita Style's muse and collaborator, a great example to the little girls out there as well as to all of us "older" gals. We look forward to more and more contributions from her as she grows!
